BLAGO’S LAWYERS: OBAMA LIED TWICE

Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s lawyers filed a redacted motion Thursday to subpoena President Obama to testify at Blago’s upcoming corruption trial in June. They apparently want the president himself to testify about whether he sent “emissaries” to Blago from the White House to inform him of the president’s preferences to fill his vacated Senate seat.
‘President Obama has direct knowledge to allegations made in the indictment. In addition, President Obama’s public statements contradict other witness statements, specifically those made by labor union official and Senate Candidate B [believed to be White House senior advisor Valerie Jarrett],” the motion said.
The former governor’s lawyers also claim that Tony Rezko admitted he violated federal election laws by personally contributing “a large sum of cash” to an unnamed public official believed to be Obama.
Blago’s lawyers also accused Obama of not telling FBI agents the truth when he said Rezko never relayed a quid pro quo offer from a lobbyist who wanted to hold a fundraiser for Obama in exchange for favorable legislation, and again when he denied having any conversations with Rezko about a license for a casino linked to the Chicago mob.

Democrat Rod Blagojevich has asked a federal judge to issue a subpoena to force President Obama to testify at the ousted governor’s corruption trial.
In a motion filed Thursday with U.S. District Judge James Zagel, Blagojevich attorney Sam Adam says Obama has direct knowledge of allegations made in the indictment.
It would be extremely unusual for a sitting president to testify at a corruption trial.
A spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office, Randall Samborn, had no comment on the 11-page motion. The filing contained several sections blacked out, apparently because they refer to material that the court has placed under seal.
Blagojevich has pleaded not guilty to charges that accuse him of scheming to sell or trade the Senate seat left vacant by Obama’s election as president.

Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s lawyers asked a federal judge today to force President Obama to testify at Blagojevich’s upcoming corruption trial, asserting that Obama played more of a role in the process of selecting someone to replace him in the U.S. Senate than Obama has acknowledged.
On the day before he was elected president, then-Sen. Obama personally called a union official about his desire for Blagojevich to
appoint Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to replace him in the Senate, according to Blagojevich’s defense filing in U.S. District Court in Chicago. The court filing cites statements the unnamed labor official made to the FBI as part of its criminal investigation of the since-ousted governor. The statements by the union official to the FBI — as relayed through Blagojevich’s lawyers — had never been made public before now.
They appear to slightly differ from Obama’s recollection of events regarding Jarrett and regarding Blagojevich’s authority as governor to appoint someone to fill Obama’s Senate seat.
Shortly after Blagojevich’s arrest in December 2008 on charges that included allegations he tried to sell an appointment to fill Obama’s seat in the Senate, a lawyer for Obama, then the president-elect, issued a report about “any staff contacts or communications” between Obama and his inner circle “relating to the president-elect’s succesor in the United States Senate.”
“The president-elect had no contact or communication with Gov. Blagojevich or members of his staff about the Senate seat. In various conversations with transition staff and others, the president-elect expressed his preference that Valerie Jarrett work with him in the White House. He also stated that he would neither stand in her way if she wanted to pursue the Senate seat nor actively seek to have her or any other particular candidate appointed to the vacancy.”
In their court filing today, Blagojevich’s lawyers said FBI interviews with the unnamed labor union official and also with an unnamed labor union president show Obama did try to intervene on Jarrett’s behalf, though.
Blagojevich’s lawyers cited a Feb. 2, 2009, interview with the labor union president regarding his conversation with the other union official who spoke of getting a Nov. 3, 2008, phone message from Obama.
The court filing says, in part: “After labor union official listened to the message, labor union official told labor union president, ‘I’m the one.’ Labor union president took that to mean that labor union official was to be the one to deliver the message on behalf of Obama that [Jarrett] was his pick.”
Blagojevich’s lawyers also cited a Feb. 3, 2009, FBI interview with the union official, quoting the official as saying, “Obama was aware that [labor union official] would be reaching out to Blagojevich.”
The Blagojevich court filing doesn’t accuse the president of any wrongdoing.
But Blagojevich’s lawyers, who previously said they might seek the president’s testimony, asked the judge in the case today to issue a trial subpoena to compel Obama to testify at the former governor’s June trial, saying Obama would be called to corroborate parts of their defense.
“There are two conflicting stories, and the defense has the right to admit evidence that contradicts the government’s claims,” the Blagojevich filing said. “Only President Obama can do this.”
Last year, Blagojevich’s lawyers asked for FBI reports of an interview with the president.
The White House has declined to comment.
“As of today’s date,” Blagojevich’s lawyers wrote, “the defense has not received any notes, transcripts or reports from President Obama’s interview with the government.”
Portions of the electronic court filing were blacked out by defense lawyers, apparently because of an order by U.S. District Judge James Zagel that has kept some material in the case under seal. But, because of a glitch, the redacted portions were viewable.

“The second reason they’re doing this, is the reason they know and we know: there’s a smoking gun on those tapes and the smoking gun is that the government is covering up the big lie that Fitzgerald gave to the world when he had me arrested on December the 9th and he told the whole world that he heard tapes and he heard telephone conversations and had to arrest a sitting governor because he was: ‘stopping a crime spree before it happened.’ That is a lie. And the reason they won’t play all those tapes is because they’re covering up that big lie that foreseeably led to a chain of events that stole a governor from the people of Illinois and undid the will of the people. ”
“I challenge Mr. Fitzgerald. Why don’t you show up in court tomorrow and explain to everybody, say to the whole world why you don’t want those tapes that you made played in court. I’ll be in court tomorrow, I hope you’re man enough to be there tomorrow, too.”

Now Comes Defendant Rod Blagojevich, by and through his counsels and hereby requests this court issue a subpoena ad testificandum for President Barack Obama. In support of said motion, defendant states the following: 1
1. President Barack Obama was elected November 4, 2008 and was inaugurated January 20, 2009. Before being elected President, Mr. Obama was a United States Senator from Illinois.
2. As a result of the election of Mr. Obama, his Senate seat was open for appointment by Governor Rod Blagojevich.
3. The charges against Mr. Blagojevich stem from his appointment of President-elect Obama’s vacated Senate seat.
4. According to media reports, President Obama was interviewed by two United States attorneys and two FBI agents for two hours. 2
5. On December 19, 2009, the defense filed a Motion for Discovery. In that motion, the defense requested all notes, transcripts, and reports generated from the government’s interview of President Barack Obama.
6. As of today’s date, the defense has not received any notes, transcripts, or reports from President Obama’s interview with the government.
7. The government alleges that Defendant Rod Blagojevich met “with a labor union official who he believed to be in contact with the President-elect in regard to the vacant Senate seat, and suggested to the labor union official that Rod Blagojevich would appoint Senate Candidate B to the vacant Senate seat in exchange for Rod Blagojevich being named Secretary of Health and Human Services.” (Indictment p. 101, para. 10(c)).
8. President Obama has stated publicly that he was “confident that no representatives of mine would have any part of any deals3 related to this seat.”4

I worry about whether this will taint the “evidence” so as to let the guilty off the hook. You know, that it’s inappropriately or illegally exposed without the judge’s permission?
No surprise, really. We could guess what was and has been hidden. Fitzgerald ought to have discovered and exposed this long ago. I have a life-sized picture of them actually serving Obama with a subpoena. He’ll claim immunity, but this all went on before he was POTUS. I hope somebody has saved the entire thing before it gets disappeared off the Web.

The judge presiding over former Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s corruption trial called an emergency meeting Thursday evening after information that was intended to remain under seal was released to the public in a defense filing to subpoena President Barack Obama.
Judge James B. Zagel scheduled a 6 p.m. hearing in his chambers to question attorneys about why the redacted information was readable, according to reports.
But Blagojevich’s attorneys denied that interpretation. When asked whether the meeting concerned the redacted documents, attorney Sheldon Sorosky responded simply “no.”
The defense motion, filed Thursday afternoon, request to call President Obama as a corroborating witness and argued that Obama could verify that Blagojevich didn’t try to sell his seat.
The filing contained several paragraphs that had been blacked out electronically. However, the underlying text was easily viewable in the electronic cersion of the document if a reader simply copied-and-pasted the paragraphs into another program.
The failure to properly redact is a relatively common one in government circles.

I have to admit that I have always sort of liked Blagojevich, remembering him from when he was first starting out. He never did fit in very well with the Chi-town thugocracy. He’s an outsider, you see. Lamecherry has thoughts on that. I do think lamecherry is correct in that Blago wouldn’t bow low enough to suit That One. So now we see a clash of the titans. Which sleazy pol will come out on top? I’m rooting for Blago, so long as he brings Obama down, where he belongs. Here’s another word I like the sound of: impeachment.

Tom Balanoff is the president of SEIU Illinois Council and the Vice President of its International Executive Board, as well as the President of SEIU Local 1 with 40,000 janitors and security guards.[1] He comes from a family of labor union officials.
His father, James Balanoff, Jr., was the president of the largest steelworker’s local in the country (Local 1010 based in Gary).
He received Master’s degree in Labor from the University of Illinois.
Balanoff gave a speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, supporting Barack Obama for President.
Balanoff is believed to be the unnamed “SEIU official” mentioned in the December 9, 2008 federal criminal complaint against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.[2]

So, rather than releasing ALL of the proof needed to determine whether Obama is a natural born citizen, he plans on crucifying a decorated officer of the US Army. In the process, Obama aka Barry Soetoro is creating a crisis situation in the US Military, because there are most likely many more officers that have the same questions that Lt Col Lakin does, but they lack the courage or the integrity to put it all on the line.
These officers are possibly carrying out illegal orders from a man that is allegedly not eligible to be president. They are violating their oaths as officers if they are knowingly closing their eyes to this constitutional crisis.
Why is the media hiding this story? This should be front page news and on the news stations 24/7, but it is not. What is the media so afraid of if this is a non-issue? I have been following this case for over 21 months and let me tell you that the left wing vermin are scared to death of this issue and of Lt Col Lakin. EVERYONE knows that Obama is lying and that he is most likely not constitutionally eligible to be president.
This is the greatest outrage in our nations history and if you are anti-birther, you are anti-constitution. This cover up started BEFORE Obama was president and this could have been avoided, so do not tell me about race or civil wars, because I am not interested.
Terry Lakin has now been officially charged in writing with two crimes.
* The first is “Missing Movement” a serious crime in the nature of a felony for failing to deploy to Afghanistan.
* The second is disobeying a direct order, and there are four specifications (separate instances) of this charge. Any soldier convicted on all charges and specifications would expect to be sentenced to years at “hard labor” in the penitentiary.

I realize you have no love for Beck…but he has been instrumental in getting the word out about the Marxists in Congress. Instead of going for one usurper, he has outed many. You may not like him for not standing up for the birthers, but he has stood up for America in the ways that he could. He backed the Tea partiers, outed ACORN, Cass Sustein, Andy Stern, Van Jones, Mao Dunn, etc. He connected dots for America, so we don’t just take one person down, we will be removing hundreds during the next election. He made people aware of the extreme corruption running rampant in Washington. We in the internet realm needed his help and that we got. He took our messages and broadcast many of our findings. Thank goodness for Glenn..otherwise the complicit media…would have continued with their propaganda.
Whether you want to give him credit or not…I will… as do the millions that tune in to listen to him. Why attack one of the few messengers that the Right has? There are hundreds of fish to fry and he is helping to do just that.
We would like one honest, unafraid person with clout to stand up to Obama, and the only ones that have continued to do so were a few military persons as well as the several attorneys….out of 300 million people in the US! People are doing what they are capable and able to do among the media and radio commentators. Every bit helps and there has been more against us than for us.

I, too, wish Beck would stand up for those who disbelieve Obama’s eligibility, but Beck’s doing what he thinks best, imho. I think he calculated that it’s a losing proposition to side openly with us and that, in the long run, he can do far more good by staying on the air and outing information that nobody can possibly argue with, because it’s DEMONSTRABLY TRUE.
That’s the problem with O’Zero’s ineligibility–we need PROOF and the proof has been disappeared or hidden and all that’s left is circumstantial evidence and logic. Against our circumstantial evidence and logic is the huge machinery of O’s government, aided and abetted by a complicit, spineless, weasley, biased, dishonest, corrupt, cowardly lamestream media.
The obots would love to see us fighting amongst ourselves. We must resist the temptation. As that Tea Party Patriot Dana Loesch recently said (paraphrasing), “We need to remember that the enemy is across the table, not sitting next to us.”
In other words, the enemy of our enemy is our friend.
Beck, even though he doesn’t openly side with us, is still our friend. He’s fighting in the place and using the method where he can do the most good, and we’re doing what we can in our own way. The perfect comeback for O’Reilly, who claims that Obama has already proved that he was born in Hawaii:
Why doesn’t Obama have enough compassion, therefore, for this patriot, Lt. Col. Lakin, and simply show the man the proof that O’Reilly believes exists?
There should be no risk to Obama, if one believes that he CAN prove that he was born in Hawaii, which O’Reilly believes.
So all one is left with is the conclusion that Obama enjoys seeing a patriotic American’s career destroyed. What will he do for a second act–pull the wings off flies?
O’Reilly must be suffering from extreme cognitive dissonance. He prides himself on his logic and intelligence. I’d love to hear his explanation for why Obama stands by and watches Lt. Col. Lakin be destroyed, when he has it in his power to end this all by showing the birth certificate that, according to O’Reilly, will prove that Obama is eligible.

We know this now that Barack Obama is not only a criminal, but a stupid criminal at that.
What is good for Rod Blagojevich is good for Birthers, is good for Tea Partiers is good for Lt. Col. Terry Lakin.
Obama’s bridge to nowhere is a span of toothpicks. The more pressure which Rod Blagojevich puts on Mr. Obama, the more his toothpicks are removed. This increases break point pressure in other areas of pressure in Birthers, Tea Partiers, Lt. Col. Terry Lakin, Orly Taitz, Joseph Farah and other interesting people. The bridge which seems too strong, all of a sudden starts exploding as the pressure builds on all points.
So Rod Blagojevich is currently the best flanking maneuver which the Americans have in dealing with Marxist Obama. Rod Blagojevich hauling Obama into court is going to be of a magnitude of humiliation and degradation which inflicts upon real Presidents which they can never shake it off.

I totally understand your point about Beck as he did not (on TV) discuss Arizona and Georgia re: the eligibility requirement….but he covers soooo much other interesting and vitally important info to many, many folks who watch him that would have no idea how to find or hear of all he tells about the coming destruction of our great Republic. But I still watch him because I truly believe he wants US and himself to remain free!!! Also, he has only so much time to give so much info!
BUT….it did seem very, very odd that Fox showed the debate between the 3 candidates in England a few nights ago (at 3 AM in place of Red Eye). Not sure if that has ever been done before on a major news network. I saw on a crawler on some station that the left libs are very popular now in good ole’ England ! Peachy, I agree with you. On Friday’s show, for example, Beck showed pages and pages of single-spaced lists of all the new agencies, commissions, and government depts. that Obama has created in just over a year in office. It DWARFS anything Roosevelt did during the New Deal.
That alone, would make a winning TV ad for ANY Republican come November.

One of the most ingenious things the Obama campaign did in 2008 was to nullify all questions about why he refused to produce his birth certificate, by stoking the “birther” conspiracy that he was not born in the United States and, thus, painting anyone who talked about his birth certificate as insane.
It’s classic magic trick distraction.
Whenever anyone questions why the current President of the United States refuses to release his original birth certificate, his followers immediately launch into an Alinsky-based attack on the person who brought the matter up — attacking that person as a “birther”.
This is a remarkably effective trick, because no one ever sees the REAL reason he does not want his birth certificate released. The “birther” screaming and yelling keeps attention focused away from what his original birth certificate would reveal about his father, Barack Hussein Obama Sr.
In 1961, when Obama was indeed born in Hawaii, his father would have most likely be listed as “Arab”, not black, on his birth certificate. Barack Hussein Obama Sr. was only 1/4 black, and identified himself as a Kenyan Arab. According to how the British would have recorded him in their documents back then, BHO Sr. would have been “Arab”.
Furthermore, if Hawaii’s birth certificates in 1961 were like our own birth certificates from Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania, and New York in the 1970s, then Obama’s official and original birth certificate would have been handwritten, with the religion of his parents recorded under their names. That’s what all of our birth certificates say, anyway. ”Catholic” is listed under most of our mothers’ and fathers’ names, with “Baptist” and “Episcopalian” on two of those slots.
We’ve always believed the reason Obama does not produce his birth certificate is because his father is listed as “Arab” and “Muslim” on that form, which is what he would have been recorded as in 1961 in Hawaii.
That cuts against the narrative that Obama rode to the White House, which he affirmed in his 2010 census — which is that he is black. This is how he has chosen to self-identify, and it’s the tool he used to advance himself so fast through the Democrat Party. He even had William Ayers write two books all about his racial grievances.
None of that flies if the public sees that his father was an “Arab” “Muslim”, as recorded on that birth certificate.
The public would have a very bad reaction to this, and would look upon the Lightbringer as a fraud and liar.
The whole White House of cards would collapse. Re-election 2012 would be a non-starter.
Hence, the White House and every Democrat in office is doing everything it can to make sure Obama’s original birth certificate never sees the light of day.
We believe if efforts in Arizona, Georgia, and Oklahoma succeed and they, and other states, pass legislation requiring presidential candidates to produce their original birth certificates to appear on the 2012 ballot, there will be some sort of fire or other accident at the Hall of Records in Honolulu. Expect a discovery relative to that which announces Obama’s original birth certificate, on file in Hawaii, was destroyed in that fire or other mysterious accident (beneficial to the White House). Because Obama moved around so much as a child, and because his mother and grandmother are now dead, the White House will announce they are unable to locate his familial copies of his original birth certificate. Thus, the recently computer generated “Certificate of Live Birth” produced by Obama will be the only document available for public inspection.
Obama’s narrative depends on his father being a black atheist from Kenya…a “goat herder”.
The reason the birth certificate will never see the light of day is because it reveals his father to be an “Arab” “Muslim”, and damn proud of it.
What’s happened here is that Obama promoted a lie about who his father really was — and he did this to get elected to high office. Now in that office, he needs to do everything possible to protect and eternally perpetuate that lie, lest he lose it all.
And the main strategy for protecting the lie is to demonize anyone asking questions about it — which is the Alinsky Method. Attack anyone asking where the birth certificate is and why it won’t be produced, call them “birthers”, and paint them as crazy…so that no one ever stops to look at the REAL reason the White House won’t produce a simple document and end all controversy.
Because they do not want you to see that Barack Hussein Obama Sr. was an “Arab” “Muslim”, according to that document.

Obama To Testify for Blagojevich?

CHICAGO- A Federal judge has denied Rod Blagojevich’s request to force Barack Obama to testify for him, at his upcoming trial. The ousted former Illinois Governor and reality TV star is accused of trying to sell Obama’s former senate seat.
Defense lawyers say the President has information which would discredit the prosecution’s witness testimony against Blagojevich, but Judge James Zagel says the defense hasn’t presented adequate need to subpoena the president, that his testimony is “not material to this case”.
Zagel did say that if more concrete evidence were presented later, during the trial, his decision could change. (I asked Blagojevich’s defense attorney, Sheldon Sorosky, if he planned to present more evidence and try again, to which he said, “of course I do”).
Blagojevich’s attornies also asked that all paperwork from FBI interviews with Obama, regarding Blagojevich’s, case be released to them. Trial is scheduled for June.

Chicago Outfit Killer Frank Calabrese Sr. Sentenced To Life
Chicago Outfit hitman Frank Calabrese Sr., convicted in September 2007 for seven murders in the Operation Family Secrets trial, today was sentenced to life in prison: A jury had found Calabrese, 71, responsible for seven of the 13 killings that federal authorities had charged him in. The jury deadlocked on the other six. But U.S. District Judge James Zagel found that federal prosecutors had proven those six murders, too, citing a preponderance of the evidence. So the judge took all 13 murders into consideration in sentencing Calabrese.
Calabrese’s killing spree stretched from 1970 to 1986. His preferred method was strangling. But he didn’t limit himself. He also shotgunned and blew up people.
Calabrese was convicted after his son Frank Jr. and his brother Nick flipped: His son, Frank Calabrese Jr., got the Family Secrets investigation started when he wrote to the FBI from prison in July 1998 and said he wanted to cooperate with authorities against father. “I feel I have to help you keep this sick man locked up forever,” Calabrese Jr. wrote.
Calabrese Sr. was known throughout his life in crime for his paranoia and his care in never talking about past mob business. But that care evaporated when he started talking with his son at length in a prison yard, offering advice and trying to groom him for the Outfit life. All the while, Calabrese Jr. wore a hidden recording device capturing all his father’s words that would lead to his conviction. Calabrese Jr. — who was not charged in the Family Secrets case — ended up catching his father on tape bragging about mob hits, even laughing about them. Even worse for Calabrese Sr. was testimony from his brother, Nick Calabrese, a mob hitman-turned-government witness who admitted going out on many mob hits with him and described them to the jury, confirming what Calabrese Sr. said on the secret recordings.

“There’s been much talk about “playing all the tapes” at Rod Blagojevich’s upcoming criminal trial. U.S. District Judge James Zagel has already told the former governor that isn’t going to happen.
Now Zagel issued a warning that Blagojevich’s lawyers better not spin the truth in front of jurors. The judge put in a formal order that would bar Blagojevich’s lawyers from telling jurors that there’s some smoking gun evidence showing Blagojevich is innocent, but they’ve been barred from bringing it into court.
“Neither side may suggest, even in the most oblique way, that it possesses favorable evidence that the Court excluded,” Zagel said. He noted that both sides are barred from doing this. But it’s been Blagojevich and his lawyers who have repeatedly attacked the government and even U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald personally for barring him from playing all the recordings at trial.
Zagel made clear recently that only he decides which recordings are relevant. He also seemed pretty open to allowing the defense to play what it chooses, so long as Blagojevich takes the stand.
By putting it in writing, Zagel is trying to keep the lawyers honest during trial. Nothing ticks off a judge more than when a lawyer disrespects a formal ruling.
What it doesn’t control is what happens outside the courtroom. There’s nothing barring Blagojevich or one of his lawyers from holding news conferences outside the courtroom.”

“House Republicans are drafting a bill that would force Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to vote against IMF loans to European countries.
The legislation is a response to the European Union and International Monetary Fund’s bailout of Greece, and possible future aid to other debt-ridden European countries.
The IMF and EU have agreed to create a nearly $1 trillion fund that would offer loan guarantees to any country that needs the help. The idea is to prevent turbulence in financial markets and currencies given the wariness with which traders are viewing Europe.
The U.S. has not offered any direct assistance to Europe, but House Republicans say the U.S. should stand against IMF assistance as well. The U.S. has a nearly 17 percent voting share in the IMF based on its annual contributions.
Republicans question whether the bailout will work, and stress that U.S. tax dollars should not be wasted.
President Barack Obama’s administration has supported the EU-IMF effort, and over the weekend Obama made it clear that a larger support program was necessary to ensure the Greek crisis didn’t cause more severe global economic problems.

the onetime Senate hopeful to a long list of federal officials Blagojevich’s team wants to put on the witness stand.
Of the 16 individuals accused by prosecutors of engaging in a conspiracy to commit offenses ranging from racketeering to bribery, none was a member of Congress or high-ranking administration official.
Jackson also said he’d been informed by U.S. attorneys that he was not a target of their investigation. “They shared with me that I am not a target of the investigation and that I am not accused of any misconduct.”.

Harris agrees – again – to testify against former boss

In the fall of 2008, John Harris was chief of staff to the governor of Illinois, a lawyer at the peak of his career offering advice to the state’s top executive.
But that governor was Rod Blagojevich, and Harris on Friday admitted that some of that advice dealt with how Blagojevich might enrich himself by appointing a successor to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.
Since prosecutors recently filed a new indictment in the case, Harris pleaded guilty for a second time and again agreed to testify for the government against his former boss. His attorney, Terry Ekl, said
Harris has surrendered his law license and is trying to support his family by learning to work on electrical towers as a 48-year-old apprentice.” “In exchange for Harris’ testimony at the trial, set to begin June 3, the government will recommend that he be sentenced to just under three years in prison.”

Embattled Metra Executive Director Phil Pagano, under investigation by his own agency for financial issues, threw himself in front of a Metra train this morning and was killed, sources said.
“In a series of developments, U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., who has helped Metra obtain hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants in recent years, called on the inspector general of the of the U.S. Department of Transportation to ”investigate whether any federal funds were misused or spent in any unauthorized way.”
“Mr. Durbin’s action came after the Federal Transit Administration
— the USDOT unit that actually makes grants to transit operators —
put Metra on restricted drawdown status which means Metra can still get federal cash, but with more than the usual oversight and review.”

Metra director Phil Pagano kills self by stepping in front of train, left suicide note

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Department says Metra Executive Director Phil Pagano left a letter that discussed his intentions to kill himself.
Pagano died this morning after he walked in front of a Metra train at a crossing near Hillside and Terra Cotta Roads in unincorporated HcHenry County, according to Sheriff Keith Nygren. The crossing is about two miles from Pagano’s home in Chrystal Lake.
At a news conference, Nygren said Pagano stepped in front of the train and the engineer only had about 5 or 10 seconds to react. He braked, but there was not enough time to stop the train. Pagano was killed instantly.
The investigation is being conducted as a suicide and an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow. Pagano was 60.
The death came on the morning Metra’s board of directors was gathering to meet to discuss Pagano’s job status with the agency. He was put on administrative leave last week after questions were raised about alleged misappropriations of Metra funds, specifically, a $58,000 bonus Pagano reportedly paid himself.
Metra released a brief press statement this morning that read, “Phil served this agency with distinction for many years. Today, we shall remember the good work he achieved with our board of directors and the men and women of Metra. He was dedicated to our passengers and he always considered the men and women of Metra his family and there is a tremendous sense of loss within the agency.”

Metra: Pagano cashed in on unchecked power

Metra’s longtime executive director, Phil Pagano, amassed so much unchallenged power that he felt confident enough to forge the signature of the agency’s chairwoman as part of a scheme to improperly give himself nearly half a million dollars in vacation pay, an investigation disclosed Friday. The allegations were contained in the executive summary of a report released one week after Pagano — the subject of a rapidly expanding inquiry into financial irregularities — stepped in front of a Metra train near his home in Crystal Lake.
Besides outlining the “blatantly illegal” advances Pagano took on vacation pay, the investigation also showed Pagano faced serious financial concerns, borrowing $839,000 against the value of a deferred compensation account and an insurance policy. Those concerns were not spelled out in the report.
“This investigation revealed substantial evidence of financial irregularities and abuses carried out by a person at the highest level of Metra who, as a result of that position, was in the best position to perpetrate these acts,” special counsel James Sotos concluded in his report to Metra’s directors.”
“The report will be turned over to the Illinois attorney general’s office for a possible criminal investigation and to any other agency that requests it, Sotos said, adding that Pagano violated Metra’s rules of conduct and “likely various state and federal criminal laws.”
U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald’s office said Friday it has asked Sotos for the report, some portions of which were not disclosed publicly at Fitzgerald’s request.”
“In his report, Sotos referred to a document which he called the “Ladd certificate,” referring to Metra’s former longtime Chairman Jeffrey Ladd”. “Ladd, an attorney, did not respond to calls for comment Friday. Neither did Pagano’s attorney, George Jackson III.
Ladd surfaced in the 2008 trial of Antoin “Tony” Rezko, who was a key fundraiser and adviser for former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Ladd testified under a grant of immunity from prosecution about his dealings in 2004 with the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board, which Rezko and political insider Stuart Levine controlled.
Ladd, a veteran lobbyist, told the Rezko jury he had been hired by hospital groups to represent them before the board, and testified that his clients paid $80,000 to a Rezko associate to keep Rezko from secretly working against them.”

A onetime Tony Rezko business partner, who once was a Chicago cop and chief executive of a company that won a $50 million security contract in Iraq, has pleaded guilty to federal charges in Chicago after he cooperated with authorities.
Daniel T. Frawley pleaded guilty on Feb. 14 to bank fraud and structuring transactions — a plea that came about two weeks after his charges were made public.
The Chicago Sun-Times has learned that Frawley won a deal that will mean a significant cut in his potential sentence because he provided information to authorities regarding Rezko, who was convicted in 2008 and is awaiting sentencing. The cooperation began quietly years ago, the Sun-Times has learned.
Frawley once ran a company called Companion Security with Rezko, a onetime adviser to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
The Sun-Times has previously reported that Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity gave a $50 million contract to Companion Security in 2005 to train Iraqi security guards.
That deal soon fizzled after a regime change, leading Companion to lobby officials — unsuccessfully — from Washington to Baghdad in hopes of reviving the deal.
Frawley’s charges in federal court, however, deal with another company, called Frawley Trading Company, which had an office in suburban Hinsdale.
He admitted to obtaining a fraudulent $4.5 million loan from First Bank in Missouri and making false representations to the bank in 1999 and 2000.
Frawley also admits to structuring a series of withdrawals from another bank….
