Apocalypse on Friday? Mayan Priest Opines About Big Government (Open Thread)

MayanCalendar - Copy

How about you? Are you worried about Friday?  Do you fear that the end of the world is nigh?  Are you concerned about the end of the 13th Baktun of the 5,125-year cycle of the Mayan Long Count, which arrives on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012?

Thus ends the fourth world, the fourth creation, in which humans appeared.  Or so the ancient Mayans believed.

Some believe this date signifies the end of world.  The end of everything.

Others believe it signifies only the beginning of another world.   A fifth creation. Whether or not there’s a place in that world for us humans remains to be seen.  We’ll know by Saturday!

Scholars disagree about the significance of the date to the Mayans who devised the calendar, although it certainly seems momentous to witness the end of a calendar that takes over 5000 years to complete.   Our calendar is a mere 12-months long–one year.  When it ends, we throw it away, put up a new calendar, and life goes on.

What do Mayans have to say? [emphasis added]

We don’t know if the world is going to end,” said Liborio Yeh Kinil, a 62-year-old who can usually be found sitting on a chair outside his small grocery store at the corner of the grassy central square of the town of Uh-May in Quintana Roo state.

Remember 2006, and the ‘6-6-6’ (June 6, 2006): A lot of people thought something was going to happen, and nothing happened after all.”

Reflecting a world view with roots as old as the nearby Ceiba tree, or Yax-che, the tree of life for the ancient Maya, Yeh Kinil added:

“Why get panicky? If something is going to happen, it’s going to happen.”

Mayan priest and farmer Petronilo Acevedo Pena says God may punish humanity someday, because people have stopped going to church.

When people planted their corn fields 50 years ago, everybody from all the towns around would pray” for good harvests, he said. “But when the government started giving out aid, seeds and fertilizer … what do the people do now? They go to the government to ask for help.”

“The world is going to end, but we don’t know when it will end, nobody ever gave a date,” said Acevedo Pena. “They said it would be in 2000, but nothing happened.”

What a strange world we live in.

Some Mayans worried about the world ending on significant dates on the Gregorian calendar, while around the world people from other cultures are worried that the world will end this Friday, with the end of the current cycle of the Mayan Long Count.

Down there in Quintana Roo, Mayan priests complain that Big Government is replacing God in the minds and hearts of the people.

Maybe it is the end of the world.  At least the world as we know it.  Maybe the ancient Mayans were onto something.  A new global world order?  Maybe God will punish us then.

Whatever!  I tend to agree with Liborio Yeh Kinil:

“Why get panicky? If something is going to happen, it’s going to happen.”

  7. Fast and Furious gun found at Mexican crime scene

Another weapon from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agency’s controversial Operation Fast and Furious was recently recovered at a Mexican crime scene, CBS News has learned. Congressional investigators say the crime scene was likely where a recent shootout took place between reported Sinaloa drug cartel members and the Mexican military, in which Sinaloa beauty queen Maria Susana Flores Gamez and four others were killed.

According to Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, the Justice Department did not notify Congress of the Fast and Furious firearm recovery in November, even though Grassley has requested an accounting of weapons that surface from the case. During Fast and Furious, ATF allowed more than 2,000 weapons, including giant .50-caliber guns, to fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels and other criminals. Other so-called “gunwalking” operations by ATF let hundreds more guns hit the street. Most of them have never been recovered.”

    • The nurse who committed suicide after answering a hoax phone call about the Duchess of Cambridge made two attempts to kill herself last winter and had been prescribed antidepressants.

Jacintha Saldanha, who took her own life days after the call from Australian DJs pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles, attempted to commit suicide last December with an overdose of pills during a family visit to India.

She survived after being rushed to hospital but tried to commit suicide again just nine days later by apparently jumping from a building.

Ms Saldanha, 46, spent several days in intensive care before receiving psychiatric treatment and being prescribed a course of powerful antidepressants for nine months. … Although Ms Saldanha’s family have previously said she did not have a history of depression, new reports suggest she has been battling the condition since at least December last year.

That month, Ms Saldanha, her accountant husband Benedict Barboza, 49, their son Junal, 17, and adopted daughter Lisha, 14, attended a family wedding in Shirva, 30 miles north of Mangalore. But on December 30, just days after the devout Catholic family celebrated Christmas, Ms Saldanha is believed to have taken an overdose of pills. She was rushed to a private hospital in Mangalore, where she was treated for ‘self-harm’. … On January 8 this year, she is believed to have attempted suicide again and was treated at Father Muller Medical College Hospital for head injuries suffered in a ‘fall’.

She was kept in intensive care for several days and then admitted to the psychiatric ward of the hospital, where she was treated for depression.

She was discharged three days later and given a nine-month course of anti-depressants. Her family was warned there was a risk that she may attempt suicide again.”

Did she or her family tell the hospital where she worked about her history? For the record, it is a MORTAL sin for a Catholic to commit suicide–automatic Hell. No way out.

No “devout” Catholic would do so. Her family won’t release the suicide notes. Why not? They fibbed before about her history of depression. WHY did she try to kill herself the other two times?
