As we saw after the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords, the progressive left can very quickly ramp up their propaganda machine–they’re ready, willing, and able to politicize the tragic murder of innocents in Newtown, Connecticut.
They have mobilized the complicit mainstream media; sent out the talking points to the Journolist (or its current incarnation) to shape the “narrative;” prepared hasty legislation to ban “assault weapons” and limit ammunition sales, ownership, importation, and production; and called for a “commission” of unelected individuals to look into these shootings (no doubt focusing mainly on gun control)–all before the facts are in.
One wonders what part of “SHALL not be infringed” they don’t comprehend.
The progressive left wasted no time organizing an astroturfed protest outside the White House, just as after the Giffords shooting. President Obama interjected himself into the memorial service for the victims, just as after the Giffords shooting, where that event was curiously “branded” and seemed more like a “pep rally“, complete with slogan-imprinted t-shirts, than a funeral.
Gun-rights activists recoil at the practice of harnessing tragedy to promote a political agenda.
To many of their opponents, there is no better moment to combat the gun violence than when the wounds are still fresh …
“Nothing is more powerful than a classroom of kindergarten kids getting killed by assault weapons,” says Bob Edgar, a preacher and former Democratic Congressman who is now the president and CEO of the liberal advocacy group Common Cause. Or, as a government employee who wandered over to the vigil from work put it:
“It helps that it was a bunch of white children in a school.”
It helps. The deaths of white children in school “helps” them; therefore, they will use the deaths of innocents to promote their political agenda, ensuring that they don’t “waste” a “serious crisis.” Let the demonizing begin:
[Democrat] Rep. Jerry Nadler said … that the president has only one option.
“There’s only one meaningful action he can take, which is to take on the N.R.A., label them as the enablers of mass murderers they are, really push for strong gun-control legislation and call out those congressional leaders who don’t support it. … It is time to call out the N.R.A. as enablers of mass murder and start embarrassing people and saying, ‘Who do you stand with? The parents and children of this country or the potential mass murderers?’”
At least Nadler didn’t, like Harry Belafonte, suggest that Obama should imprison his opponents like a Third World dictator. Yet.
In the same vein, progressives plan a march on the NRA, as if the more than 200 million gun-owning, law-abiding citizens of the USA are somehow to blame for these murders. Mayor Bloomberg alarmingly opined:
It’s time for the president, I think, to stand up and lead and tell this country what we should do — not go to Congress and say, ‘What do you guys want to do?’ … What the president can do is number one, through executive action, he can order his agencies to to enforce the laws more aggressively.
The president of the United States is NOT a dictator. He does NOT “tell this country what we should do.”
He has no constitutional power to legislate. We the People RULE in this country. The Congress are OUR REPRESENTATIVES. As such, they are the deciders–not the president. They write and pass legislation. Obama’s only job with regard to legislation is to sign it or veto it when it reaches his desk. Obama MUST ask the Congress what they want to do. He does NOT rule via executive order, either, at least not constitutionally.
Never let a serious crisis go to waste, “by any means necessary.” The goal of the gun control activists of the progressive left is to incrementally disarm the US population and thereby gut the Second Amendment to the Constitution.
Make no mistake, Hitleresque confiscation of all guns is their end game. Without disarming the citizens of the US, the progressive left (aka the communist collectivist socialists) will not be able to IMPOSE their dreamed-of new world order, their fundamental communistic transformation of the United States of America.
Why the selective outrage? If leftists were truly concerned about gun violence and its root causes, then they would address all gun violence, not just mass shootings of a “bunch of white children.” Where is their outrage over murders that happen every day, all across this country?
In September 2012, thirty-eight people were shot, 3 shot dead, over just one weekend in Chicago. Thirty-three homicides by gunshot in Chicago over one month this year (11/9/12-12/9/12). Where is President Obama? Where is the Democrat call for a commission to study the root causes of gun violence in Chicago and how to stop it? Why is there so much gun violence in Chicago, Obama’s “hometown”?
Recently, a federal appeals court struck down Chicago’s ban on carrying concealed weapons, as unconstitutional. Despite rampant gun violence in Chicago, Chicago is one city that has extremely strict gun control laws (an assault weapon ban as well as registration of handguns). Washington DC also has very strict gun control laws, yet both cities continue to have high rates of gun violence and gun homicides.
Connecticut also has strict gun control laws, yet that did not stop the shooting in Newtown. The perpetrator stole the weapons, so he used them illegally. There have been various reports about the types of weapons the shooter used. As well, there have been conflicting stories about whether or not the shooter used a high-powered rifle or whether that gun was left behind in his car. But the media never allow facts to get in the way of a good progressive, leftist meme, so they will blame assault weapons and ammunition, and not the shooter’s obvious mental illness or the school’s lack of security.
Guns are forbidden on school property, so that gun control law failed to stop this crime. What might have stopped it? An armed security guard or an armed and trained teacher. Or simply locked school and classroom doors. These are logical, common sense solutions promoted by those with the most experience dealing with criminals and gun violence: law enforcement officers:
St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch says it is time to talk about arming civilian school personnel following Friday’s massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, comparing it to arming airline pilots after September 11, 2001.
“I see it no differently,” he said. “Pilots have been armed now for many many years, we’ve not had another hijacking and the issue is, for the bad guy, he doesn’t know which airplane he’s getting on, if the pilot is armed or not.”
Fitch said the killing will not be stopped by legislation or laws.
“If there’s somebody that’s really hellbent on doing something like this, they’re not going to care what the law is.” …
Concerning the possibility of gun control, Fitch said “it’s just not going to happen,” and called for an increased focus on mental health instead. …
“We know this individual has a mental health history in Connecticut, we’ve seen that in all the school shootings, and additional resources would be helpful.
Police chief Fitch echoed words spoken in a seminar two years ago:
[Lt. Col. Dave] Grossman said that agencies and officers, although facing an uphill slog against the denial of the general public, must diligently work toward increasing understanding among the sheep that the wolves are coming for their children.
Police officers must train and drill with teachers, not only so responding officers are intimately familiar with the facilities, but so that teachers know what they can do in the event of an attack. …
Grossman said that if the school administrators at Columbine had spent a fraction of the money they’d spent preparing for fire — if the teachers there had spent a fraction of the time they spent preparing for fire — doing lockdown drills and talking with local law enforcers about the violent dangers they face, the outcome that day may have been different. …
Grossman said (and most cops agree) that many of the most important things we can do to protect our kids would cost us nothing or next-to-nothing.
Among Lt. Col. Grossman’s suggestions?
Put police officers in schools, because with just one officer assigned to a school, the probability of a mass murder in that school drops to almost zero.
Ensure that the school/classroom have just a single point of entry. Simply locking the back door helps create a hard target.
Conduct your active shooter drills within (and in partnership with) the schools in your city so teachers know how to respond, and know what it looks like when you do your response.
Armed citizens can help. … Whatever your personal take on gun control, it is all but certain that a killer set on killing is more likely to attack a target where the citizens are unarmed, rather than one where they are likely to encounter an armed citizen response.
We must prepare for violence like the firefighter prepares for fire. And we must do that today.
Do we try to prevent fires by calling for a ban on electricity, matches, lighters, or anything else that causes fires? Obviously not.
Do we try to prevent drunk driving deaths by calling for a ban on automobiles or alcohol? Obviously not.
So why do leftists, in knee jerk fashion, cry “gun control!” whenever a crime like this occurs? Why do they focus on the inanimate object instead of on the agency of the shooter, his motives, his mental illness, or upon how to prevent such deaths through better training and better security at schools?
Because their goal is gun confiscation. They merely use these “serious” crises as an EXCUSE to promote their Hitleresque agenda.
What might stop some of the murders in Chicago? A populace that is not unconstitutionally banned from carrying weapons outside their homes.
The school in Newtown had a new security system. And yet, their “security system” failed. The shooter allegedly broke a window to get in. (If true. The news media continue to report contradictory “facts”.)
Some security system if someone can merely break a window to gain access, while carrying a huge rifle and wearing combat clothing!
What went wrong? That remains to be seen. Inadequate security or poor training, but taking guns and ammunition away from law-abiding citizens will not prevent school shootings.
To those who are against armed security guards in schools or against allowing school employees with concealed carry permits to carry weapons into schools, I say this:
Let’s disarm all bodyguards, then. No Hollywood leftists should have armed guards. Disarm the Secret Service. Disarm them all. Why are the lives of Hollywood leftists and DC politicians more important than the lives of precious, innocent school children?
To those who say schools should not be fortresses, I say this:
Take all the locks off your own doors. Leave your doors wide open. Disarm your security systems. Why do you make your home a fortress?
We need to be reasonable and not allow leftists and gun control activists to use this “serious crisis” to further their political agendas.
When the Founders wrote the right to keep and bear arms into the Constitution, they knew exactly what they were doing: Ensuring the SECURITY of a FREE state.
Once We the People are disarmed, only the government and criminals will have weapons. Once the elite government class are the only ones with weapons, then they can impose upon the People whatever tyrannical regime they like. Remember what happened in Nazi Germany. Don’t fall for their propaganda.
