Little Antonio was ruthlessly shot in the face, allegedly by two black teenagers, who will stand trial next month:
Georgia police … charged two teens with murder a day after a 13-month-old boy was shot dead in his stroller and his mother wounded during a holdup.
Seventeen-year-old De’Marquise Kareem Elkins, the suspected gunman, was charged as an adult with first-degree murder, said Brunswick Police Chief Tobe Green. A 14-year-old companion was also charged with murder but was not identified because he is a juvenile. They were arrested early Friday.
Sherry West said she and her 13-month-old son, Antonio Santiago, were on a walk about 9 a.m. Thursday when they were approached by two young men. The older teen brandished a handgun and demanded money.
After telling him she didn’t have any money, the gunman then asked, “Do you want me to kill your baby?” West told the Associated Press.
West said he fired the first shot into the ground, then shot her in the left ear and upper left leg. The gunman then walked around the stroller and shot her child once in the face, killing him instantly.
In the post, I asked the obvious question: Why has there been no expression of outrage about this murder, or sympathy for Antonio’s family, coming from the First Lady and her husband, white-African-American-who-identifies-as-black Barack Obama? I wrote then and I reiterate today:
It should not matter what race the alleged suspects are, but unfortunately it does matter. A senseless crime like this should outrage all of us equally, but unfortunately …
The race of the perpetrator and the race of the victim matter because, as exemplified by our First Couple, reactions are too often selective and discriminating.
Empathy offered or completely absent …
Heartfelt condolences expressed or silence …
So far as I know, there’s been no comment yet from the First Couple about Antonio’s death, nor has there been any comment from white-black-Bajan-American Eric Holder, current Attorney General of the USA, concerning this particular and much more heinous “unnecessary” and “tragic” death. Why is that?
Holder is trying as hard as he can to find a way to press federal charges against the acquitted and INNOCENT white hispanic George Zimmerman. The jury ruled that Zimmerman acted in self-defense when he shot black teenager Trayvon Martin, who had already broken Zimmerman’s nose and was at the time of his death pummeling Zimmerman, beating his head into a concrete sidewalk.
Little Antonio was doing nothing more than sitting in his stroller, enjoying the day. Antonio was horribly profiled allegedly by two depraved teenagers who allegedly murdered him in coldest blood.
Today I ran across an essay by someone who has a unique way of saying much the same thing: [emphasis added]
You won’t recognize me. My name was Antonio Santiago and I was the 13-month old child who was shot at point blank range by two teens who were attempting to rob my mother, who was also shot. A Grand Jury of my mommy’s peers from Brunswick GA determined the teens who murdered me will not face the death penalty, because they are underage. Too bad I was given a death sentence for being innocent and defenseless, but I was underage too.
My family made the mistake of being half white in a 73% non-white neighborhood, but my murder was not ruled a Hate Crime. …
Nor did President Obama take so much as a single moment to acknowledge my murder.
I am one of the youngest murder victims in our great Nation’s history, but the media doesn’t care to cover the story of my tragic demise, President Obama has no children who could possibly look like me – so he doesn’t care and the media doesn’t care because my story is not interesting enough to bring them ratings so they can sell commercial time slots.
There is not a white equivalent of Al Sharpton because if there was he would be declared racist, so there is no one rushing to Brunswick GA to demand justice for me. There is no White Panther party to put a bounty on the lives of those who murdered me.
I have no voice, I have no representation and unlike those who shot me in the face while I sat innocently in my stroller – I no longer have my life.
In the same way that Antonio’s case is ignored, hundreds of other victims of racial or anti-gay violence are ignored by Obama and the Justice Department under Holder, all because of the skin color of the perpetrators versus the victims.
Is not Obama the president of us all? Does not Holder head a Department of Justice that is supposed to seek and find justice for us all, regardless of race?
REMEMBER ANTONIO SANTIAGO.
Demand justice for him, too.
