Childhood Obesity and Barack Obama – Open Thread

Studies show that as many as one third of children in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Diabetes among children and teens is on the rise, and it is harder for them to control the disease.

Michelle Obama’s focus as First Lady is on physical fitness. She hosts exercise workouts in the White House for the Biggest Loser reality TV show.

Michelle Obama exercises in the White House

She lauds the importance of a healthy diet, especially for poor children who live in “food deserts” where they don’t have access to healthy food (a claim that has recently been proved false. The produce is there; the poor choose not to buy it.)

Michelle Obama especially encourages school children to get fit and to stay fit via the five pillars (seriously) of her “Let’s Move” program, which is aimed at young people:

At the launch of the initiative, President Barack Obama signed a Presidential Memorandum creating the first-ever Task Force on Childhood Obesity to conduct a review of every single programs and policies relating to child nutrition and physical activity and develop a national action plan to maximize federal resources and set concrete benchmarks toward the First Lady’s national goal.

The Task Force recommendations focus on the five pillars of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative:

  1. Creating a healthy start for children
  2. Empowering parents and caregivers
  3. Providing healthy food in schools
  4. Improving access to healthy, affordable foods
  5. Increasing physical activity

Everyone has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity, including parents and caregivers, elected officials from all levels of government, schools, health care professionals, faith-based and community-based organizations, and private sector companies. Your involvement is key to ensuring a healthy future for our children.

So concerned is she about childhood obesity, that she ranks it right up there as a serious threat to our economy and military readiness. Her “Let’s Move Cities and Towns” initiative has even created or saved thousands of jobs! Nevertheless, it was recently reported that despite the First Lady’s enthusiasm, the White House is backing away from these healthy food initiatives because of pressure from lobbyists. Say it isn’t so!

Given Michelle Obama’s intense focus on how children should maintain a healthy weight, isn’t it odd that she never holds her husband out as a weight-loss role model for the young people of America?

She never talks about how her husband must have struggled with his weight when he was in high school.

Barack Obama (left), freshman year at Punahou High School

Nor do either of the Obamas discuss that Barack Obama was a “fat” child when he lived in Indonesia, as attested to by most of his childhood friends there.

Why don’t they share with every American child exactly how Barack lost that excess weight between his freshman and sophomore years of high school?

What an example he’d be for them!

The Biggest Loser, Presidential Style.

Why, it’s a perfect fit for her outreach to school children, especially to poor “children of color”, like the young Barack Obama, who disproportionately are overweight because they live in those “food deserts” that (don’t) exist in inner cities.

The First Lady could use her husband’s fatty “before” photos and his skinny “after” photos. So why doesn’t she?

Barack Obama circa 1971, Hawaii

Barack Obama is more than amply praised for every other accomplishment in his life, real or imagined; but not for this one, which is so difficult for many ordinary Americans to achieve.

What’s his weight loss secret? Enquiring minds want to know.

Barack Obama

Why doesn’t he share his secret with all of America?  Why not with the entire world?

Why hasn’t Michelle written a diet book, especially one for children?

Why doesn’t Barack Obama hold himself out as a role model for children and teens who are trying to lose weight?

  1. Miri, Kate says comments are disabled and she is trying to post. She is trying to reply on this post. Will you check it and see if comments are disabled please ? TU.

    • They weren’t disabled. She went to spam, maybe because of the link. But she was also in pending, so maybe she’d never commented and been approved there before. Should be okay now.

    • TU Miri. She has commented there before so I am not sure what happened but tu again.

      • Sometimes if a person changes email addresses or screen name, or even makes a mistake in spelling, it goes into moderation.

        • I hope you do not mind Miri. I am adding this post to my research one. This post inspired me to think it all over again.

    • I want to say something again: We do NOT disable comments, ever. If people break a commenting rule, we may ban them or throw them into moderation for the next time they post. But we NEVER disable comments. Nor do we ban trusted people who’ve commented here before. If we were to ban or send someone into moderation, we’d tell them so. That we’re doing it, I mean, and WHY.

You may have seen me explain to new commenters why they were never allowed out of moderation. Most often, it’s because of direct insults to us here.

However, if a person who has commented here before changes ANYTHING in the way they comment (such as a different email address, a new IP#, or possibly even adding a URL) then WORDPRESS puts them into spam or moderation. We can’t control WordPress. They have automatic software that does this and sometimes none of us is available to catch the comments and pull them out of spam or moderation. So please don’t jump to conclusions. In time, we will find the problem and explain it to you, if we can. Sometimes, we never know why WordPress does what they do.

  2. All,

    Don’t know what to make of this but if true, we’re in some serious trouble;

    • What I make of this is that it recapitulates everything we’ve speculated about but adds nothing to it. Like the WH Insider. Nothing new. Nothing to prove his provenance. Who is Doug Hagmann? Like we tell Trowbridge: Show us the money. Show us the proof.

    • I heard this reported on Tru News a week or so ago. There was also another write-up that I remember that I kept but didn’t post.

DHS Informant: ‘We Are Preparing For Massive Civil War’

      TruNews interview, May 2, 2012.
      12:21 starts

A unknown member of Congress answers why they won’t stand up to Obama and his thugs.

He said, “Because of the intimidation..we afraid for the lives of our children and our grandchildren.”

What kind of hold does this man have over these people, they ask?

There are a bunch of patriot eunuchs in this country!
      said Hagman.

Abt. 40: Obama had a Dustup with the Secret Service – and now Obama wants his own people to protect him. He doesn’t trust the Secret Service. Was there a coup going on during the secret service scandal?

Preparing for violence at the NATO Summit in Chicago. There is an order that they can shoot to kill at NATO Summit meeting in Chicago. Expecting major rioting there. Joliet prison is to be reopened.

Troops of foreign origin, no insignias, drab uniforms, red berets, walking together were seen.

    • I have heard this before and it is very scary Sue.

    • I agree, and I sent the link to WND and to the Patriots Union also. It’s serious. I hate to say it, but with the BO admin., I can see it being true.

      • Of course we can see it being true. We’ve been researching exactly this and finding links and connections and speculating about exactly this. NOTHING new is in there except his claim of a ANONYMOUS insider and the stories that read exactly like WH Insider’s. Did you hear that the Ulsterman site is connected to the Dems? I don’t know if that’s true, but it’s been on the Web and is certainly something to think about.

I’d be more impressed if Hagmann had something NEW. Something new that we could verify. Not the same old, same old. Talks about the ammo purchase, which we know about. Talks about the checkpoint equipment, which we know about. Let’s hear about something EXCLUSIVE, reported nowhere else but Hagmann’s. Something we could then verify. Then I’d be impressed.

btw, the only place I find that “quote” by Kissinger is an anonymous attribution by someone who claims to have taped it. So where’s the tape so people can HEAR IT and compare it to Kissinger’s voice?

That’s a perfect explanation of what I was talking about before–how they deliberately triangulate by using against Romney and conservatives what we say about Barry. That he’s too far from the middle. That he’s RADICAL. That he’s not transparent. Everything we say about Barry, the left and the media are saying about Romney. Why? To take the sting out of the words. To PRETEND that it’s only campaign rhetoric and to fool people, once again, into NOT BELIEVING WHAT’S RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM: THAT HE IS A RADICAL, COMMUNIST, POSSIBLY NOT-AMERICAN USURPER AND FRAUD.

Look at this photo of Barry’s campaign staff in Chicago:

Nearly all white. Nearly all male. Violating the civil rights laws? Why don’t the quotas that they use against companies like Wal-Mart, AB/Inbev, etc. apply to Obama? This is really no surprise to me, given the tone of his campaign–disproportionately young men with the attitude typical of egotistical young progressive men. And Barry is nothing if not a sexist. Where are the black faces?

  5. I don’t see too many affirmative action people there. ;lol:

    • But the economy is improving according to Obama! The Obamas and their minions lie with straight faces as they wipe the drippings from the Wagyu beef from their mouth that was flown in for their consumption, and pick the arugula from their teeth as the Baked Alaska is served. All those families who are barely making it and having to use stamps to buy their food should show the Democrats their thanks for the wonderful economy by voting their red a@@es out in November. Then they will see the economy improve so they too can buy some filets and begin having their own parties.

And the journolist campaign continues. This newspaper just happens to be running a series about obesity. And they just happen to report today about a study that just happened to be released yesterday that proves We the People MUST change:

“The country has moved too slowly to address its top health crisis and must make changes — from taxing soda to creating incentives for fruit and vegetable farmers — to curb the obesity epidemic, according to a report released Tuesday by the Institute of Medicine. … The institute, which advises the government, assembled a task force to assess previous public health efforts and offer new solutions. … Specific goals include requiring 60 minutes a day of physical activity in schools, drafting guidelines for food advertising to children, expanding workplace wellness programs, making healthy foods available in movie theaters and sports arenas, building more walking trails and increasing healthy options in restaurants. [INCREASING choices or REMOVING and BANNING “unhealthy” ones? What do YOU think? TAXING! The magic word!]

A health advocacy group urged governments, the food and beverage industry, and schools to adopt the recommendations. … The institute’s report is the centerpiece of a major public health campaign involving government health agencies, nonprofit organizations and the HBO cable network. The multipronged approach is required to solve such a complex societal issue, organizers said. … Schools are another focus of the institute’s report, which recommends 60 minutes of physical activity every day for all students, healthier cafeteria foods and more nutrition classes. [BAN the unhealthy food. FORCE the kids to eat what Michelle says (not what she eats, though). FORCE them to be indoctrinated in “nutrition” classes.]

The report’s suggestion that sugar-sweetened beverages be taxed by the ounce, or by teaspoon of added sugar, has drawn the most backlash.

The Center for Consumer Freedom, which is funded by restaurants and the food industry, [GASP! Those evil corporations. Profiteers!] blasted the report as a move to take away Americans’ food choices. … Personal responsibility isn’t enough, said John Hoffman, executive producer of “The Weight of the Nation,” a documentary series airing this month on HBO in conjunction with the Institute of Medicine report.”

Of course “personal responsibility” isn’t enough when you’re dealing with TYRANTS and NAZIS who want to control you from cradle to grave. THEY HATE FREEDOM. They hate that YOU are not SUBJECT to THEM.

    • Personal responsibility isn’t enough? says Hoffman. We need them to be responsible for how we eat, when and where. Tax everything – that’s the ticket. That will stop all of us from purchasing those non nutritional foods.

By the way, didn’t all that physical activity called recess get stopped because of budgetary cuts to schools? Then another group came along to tell everyone how dangerous all of the equipment on the playgrounds were so those were removed too? You could get hurt by swings, slides, teeter todders, and merry go rounds. Next it was dangerous to use softballs so those were replaced with plastic balls. Then someone could fall off their bike so kids have to wear helmets. The air and dirt outside was so filthy that kids needed to go inside to protect themselves. The kids became addicted to TV and didn’t play outside anymore so their immune systems weren’t acclimated to the dirt outside – now they need to play outside and get dirty. Common sense went by the wayside a long time ago.

Now these people whoever they are are trying to dictate because of Michelle’s obesity problem how the rest of the nation should eat. Anyone remember Twiggy? The emaciated young girl model was used to make us aware of girls who were anorexic or bulimic trying to stay thin. She was a “bad” role model so skinny gals weren’t used in fashion magazines any longer. Normal looking girls were. Now overweight people are being singled out as if they don’t get enough ribbing from their peers or family. They are now targets for ridicule.

My mom was a stickler for good nutrition and we had to eat a tablespoon of everything served. Being a kid, I darn well refused. But I was supposed to sit there until it was gone. Also of the kid mentality, the dog might save me from the liver I was served or lima beans. If the dog refused it, a napkin concealed the food and was hidden under the radiator in the corner. Chili was more difficult to conceal. Do I think you can “make” kids eat what they don’t want? It didn’t work with me. They used the think of the poor kids in India or wherever too. So send them my food! Funny thing is I really like liver and chili now, but still hate lima beans.

    • Specific goals include requiring 60 minutes a day of physical activity in schools.

THAT one is great. It will help alot and kids love P.E. An hour a day workout 5 times per week. The fat will peel off kids. A main reason kids were not fat when we were young.Right there.

      • That’s true and it’s good for kids to be kids and play. But I’d prefer their parents make these decisions and not a government FORCING kids to do it.

Ruh, roh. How will Barry like having HIS food choices policed? How dare they hold him to the same standard his czars and Moochelle Antoinette want US to follow?

“A healthcare advocacy group run by physicians is preparing to file a petition calling on President Obama to stop eating hamburgers, hot dogs and other unhealthy foods before cameras.

“As role model to millions of Americans, the president has a responsibility to watch what he eats in public,” said Susan Levin, nutrition education director with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM).”
