Nikolai Ivanovich Yezhov (sometimes known as Ezhov; Russian: Никола́й Иванович Ежо́в; May 1, 1895 – February 4, 1940) was a senior figure in the NKVD (the Soviet public and secret police) during the period of the Great Purge. His reign is sometimes known as “Yezhovshchina” (Russian: Ежовщина), “The Yezhov era”; also “The Hedgehog Era,” since the word Yezh (Russian: Еж) means hedgehog.[3]
Early life and career
Little reliable information is available about Yezhov’s family and early years. The name Nikolai Yezhov itself is the name of a character from Maxim Gorky’s novel Foma Gordeyev, and as such may have been an adopted revolutionary pseudonym, a common practice among Soviet revolutionaries which would help to evade tsarist prosecution. After the success of the Bolshevik revolution, many early participants such as Lenin and Stalin would continue to be known by their nicknames.
Yezhov was born in Saint Petersburg, according to his official Soviet biography, though other records[specify] point to the possibility that he was born in Marijampolė. In a form filled out in 1921, Yezhov claimed some ability to speak Polish and Lithuanian.
He completed only his elementary education. From 1909 to 1915, he worked as a tailor’s assistant and factory worker. From 1915 until 1917, Yezhov served in the Imperial Russian Army. He joined the Bolsheviks on May 5, 1917 in Vitebsk, a few months before the October Revolution. During the Russian Civil War, 1919–1921, he fought in the Red Army. After February 1922, he worked in the political system, mostly as a secretary of various regional committees of the Communist Party. In 1927, he was transferred to the Accounting and Distribution Department of the Communist Party where he worked as an instructor and acting head of the department. From 1929 to 1930, he was the Deputy of the People’s Commissar for Agriculture. In November 1930, he was appointed to the Head of several departments of the Communist Party: department of special affairs, department of personnel and department of industry. In 1934, he was elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party;[4] in the next year he became a secretary of the Central Committee. From February 1935 to March 1939, he was also the Chairman of the Central Commission for Party Control.
In the “Letter of an Old Bolshevik” (1936), which is purported to be the musings of Nikolai Bukharin[citation needed], there is this contemporary description of Yezhov:
“In the whole of my long life, I have never met a more repellent personality than Yezhov’s. When I look at him I am reminded irresistibly of the wicked urchins of the courts in Rasterayeva Street, whose favorite occupation was to tie a piece of paper dipped in paraffin to a cat’s tail, set fire to it, and then watch with delight how the terrified animal would tear down the street, trying desperately but in vain to escape the approaching flames. I do not doubt that in his childhood Yezhov amused himself in just such a manner and that he is now continuing to do so in different forms.”
Physically, Yezhov was short in stature, standing five feet, or 151 cm – and that, combined with his sadistic personality led to his nickname ‘The Poisoned Dwarf’ or ‘The Bloody Dwarf’.

Yezhov had married the educated and sincerely Marxist Antonia Titova in 1919, but he later divorced her and married Yevgenia Feigenburg. Yezhov and Feigenburg had an adopted daughter, called Natasha, an orphan from a children’s home.

Yezhov was known as a determined loyalist of Joseph Stalin, and in 1935 he wrote a paper in which he argued that political opposition must eventually lead to violence and terrorism; this became in part the ideological basis of the purges.[5] He became People’s Commissar for Internal Affairs (head of the NKVD) and a member of the Presidium Central Executive Committee on September 26, 1936, following the dismissal of Genrikh Yagoda. Yezhov’s first task from Stalin was to personally investigate and conduct the prosecution of his long-time Chekist mentor Yagoda, which he did with remorseless zeal, fabricating the evidence[citation needed] necessary to see him condemned to execution as a traitor. As an additional insult, Yezhov ordered Yagoda to be stripped naked and severely beaten by the guards at the Lubyanka before his execution.
Yagoda was but the first of many to die by Yezhov’s orders. Under Yezhov, the Great Purge reached its height during 1937-1938, with roughly 50-75%[citation needed] of the members of the Supreme Soviet and officers of the Soviet military being stripped of their positions and imprisoned, exiled to the Siberian gulags or executed, along with a greater number of ordinary Soviet citizens, accused (usually without evidence) of disloyalty or “wrecking” by local Chekist troikas in order to satisfy Yezhov’s[citation needed] arbitrary quotas for arrests and executions. Yezhov also conducted a thorough purge of the security organs, both NKVD and GRU, removing and executing many officials who had been appointed by his predecessors Yagoda and Menzhinsky, but even his own appointees as well. He staunchly maintained that it was worth having “ten innocent people suffer rather than letting one ‘enemy of the people’ escape”. In 1937 and 1938 at least 1.3 million were arrested, and at least 681,692 people (and likely far more) were shot, for ‘crimes against the state’. The Gulag population grew by 685,201, with further deaths within (at least 140,000) and during the transports to the camps.[6]
The apex of Yezhov’s career was reached on 20 December 1937, when the party hosted a giant gala to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the NKVD at the Bolshoi Theater. Enormous banners with portraits of Stalin hung side-by-side with those of Yezhov. On a stage crowded with flowers, Anastas Mikoyan, dressed in a dark caucasian tunic and belt, praised Yezhov for his tireless work. “Learn the Stalin way to work”, he said, “from Comrade Yezhov, just as he learned and will continue to learn from Comrade Stalin himself”. The crux of this line was that every Soviet citizen should aspire to the same level of Stalinist orthodoxy as an NKVD agent. When presented, Yezhov received an “uproarious greeting” of thunderous applause. He stood, one observer wrote, “eyes cast down and a sheepish grin on his face, as if he wasn’t sure he deserved such a rapturous reception.” Stalin himself was present, and observed the scene from his private box. Yezhov may also have realized the danger he was in, as Stalin was known to have no tolerance for high Party leaders given independent public acclaim and popularity, sincerely felt or not. Stalin was, as always, deeply suspicious of the political ambitions of his immediate subordinates, and was known for regularly purging the upper ranks of his executive apparatus (as was evinced with Yagoda) out of fear that they would conspire to oppose him.[citation needed]

Yezhov was appointed to the post of People’s Commissar for Water Transport on April 6, 1938. While maintaining his other posts, his role as grand inquisitor and extractor of confessions gradually diminished as Stalin retreated from the worst excesses of the Great Purge. Contrary to Stalin’s expectations, the vast number of party officials and military officers lost during Yezhov’s purges had only been partially made good by replacement with trusted Stalinist functionaries[citation needed], and he eventually correctly recognized that the disruption was severely affecting the country’s ability to coordinate industrial production and defend its borders from the growing threat of Nazi Germany.
On August 22, 1938, Lavrenty Beria was named as Yezhov’s deputy. Over the following months, Beria (with Stalin’s approval) began to increasingly usurp Yezhov’s governance of the Commissariat for Internal Affairs. As early as September 8, Mikhail Frinovsky, Yezhov’s first deputy, was relocated from under his command into the Navy. Stalin’s penchant for periodically executing and replacing his primary lieutenants was well known to Yezhov, as he had previously been the man most directly responsible for orchestrating such actions. Well familiar with the typical Stalinist bureaucratic precursors to eventual dismissal and arrest, he recognized Beria’s increasing influence with Stalin as a threat to his position, and plunged headlong into alcoholism and despair. Already a heavy drinker, in the last weeks of his service he reportedly was disconsolate, slovenly, and drunk nearly all of his waking hours, rarely bothering to show up to work. As anticipated, Stalin and Vyacheslav Molotov, in a report dated November 11, sharply criticized the work and methods of the NKVD during Yezhov’s tenure as chief, thus creating the bureaucratic pretense necessary to remove him from power. At his own request, Yezhov was officially relieved of his post as the People’s Commissar for Internal Affairs on November 25, succeeded by Beria.
Stalin was evidently content to ignore Yezhov for several months, finally ordering Beria to denounce him at the annual Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. On March 3, 1939 Yezhov was relieved of all his posts in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. On April 10, he was arrested and imprisoned at the Sukhanovka prison. Amongst his main accusations the former Narkom was accused in accordance with the Article 154 of Criminal Code (“sodomy, committed with violence or the use of the dependent status of the victim”).[7][8][9] Yezhov quickly broke under torture, and confessed to the standard battery of capital crimes necessary to firmly establish a Soviet political prisoner’s status as an “enemy of the people” prior to execution, including “wrecking”, official incompetence, theft of government funds and treasonous collaboration with German spies and saboteurs, none of which were likely or supported by evidence.[citation needed] Apart from this he confessed to a humiliating history of gross sexual deviancy, both homosexual and heterosexual, that was oddly (in contrast with other condemned Bolshevik officials) later partially corroborated by witness reports and deemed mostly true in subsequent inquiries[citation needed].
On February 3, 1940 Soviet judge Vasili Ulrikh tried Yezhov in Beria’s office. Yezhov was nearly incoherent, and, like his predecessor Yagoda, mournfully maintained his love for Stalin to the end, flatly refusing Beria’s suggestion that he confess to a plot to kill Stalin, saying, “it is better to leave this earth as an honorable man.” Yezhov begged Beria on his knees for a few minutes with Stalin to explain himself, and was repeatedly ignored, finally vowing he would “die with Stalin’s name on his lips”. When the sentence of death was read, Yezhov fainted and had to be carried from the room.
On February 4, he was executed by NKVD Chief Executioner Major-General Vasili Blokhin in the basement of a small NKVD station on Varsonofevskii Lane in Moscow. The main NKVD execution chamber in the basement of the Lubyanka was deliberately avoided to ensure total secrecy[citation needed], since Stalin intended to quietly remove a dangerous and potentially embarrassing colleague, not conduct a show trial in which Yezhov might possibly betray Stalin’s secrets or cast a bad light on his apparatus. Yezhov’s refusal to confess to a plot to murder Stalin had made him useless for propaganda purposes, and in any case Stalin was seeking to tie up loose ends in his administration, not stage a propaganda coup[citation needed]. According to a witness[who?], just before the execution Yezhov was ordered to undress himself and then was brutally beaten by guards at the order of Beria, the new NKVD Chief, just as Yezhov had ordered the guards to beat and humiliate his predecessor and former mentor Genrikh Yagoda before his execution only two years prior. Yezhov reportedly[citation needed] had to be carried into the execution chamber semi-conscious, hiccuping and weeping uncontrollably. His ashes were dumped in a common grave at Moscow’s Donskoi Cemetery.[10] The execution remained secret, and as late as 1948, Time reported that “[s]ome think he is still in an insane asylum.″[11]

Correction: I cannot pull up the Watertown Daily Times version — I can only find that version via other sources, such as Freepers, etc.. Four years after his death, a lot of people talk as if Patrice Emergy Lumumba were still the Congo. In and out of the U.N., African leftists and their Communist backers seem determined to turn Lumumba into a martyr-saint. Bulgaria and Albania joined last week to praise the “great Congolese patriot” who symbolized the “heart of Africa” but was “brutally assassinated.” The Ethiopian and Guinean delegations compared him to Hammarskjöld, while the Mali representative went one better and compared him to Hammarskjöld and John Kennedy.
Throughout the Communist bloc and in much of Africa, Lumumba’s name, with its rhythm of jungle drums, is invoked by innumerable agitators. It is also borne by hundreds of streets, dozens of schools. Moscow has its Patrice Lumumba Friendship University for foreign students, Belgrade its Patrice Lumumba student home. In Castro Cuba, romantically inclined young workers find togetherness in Patrice Lumumba social centers. Last week in Kenya, the brand new $120,000 Lumumba Institute, built with Russian and Chinese money, opened its doors to “rehabilitate the minds of Kenyans from a colonial mentality and teach them how to sacrifice themselves for the good of the country and of Africans as a whole.”
No Longer Monkeys. Amid all this mumbo jumbo, the real Lumumba has been almost forgotten. He was, of course, a violent, often eloquent anticolonialist, and an infectiously fanatic orator. At the 1960 independence ceremony, he seized the microphone to tell Belgium’s King Baudouin that “from today, we are no longer your monkeys.” He was also the first Congolese politician to think beyond tribal boundaries, the founder (in 1959) of the Congo’s first semi-national political movement, its first real pan-African nationalist—and its first Prime Minister. But at the time of his death, most of his countrymen had either never heard of him or hated him.
He was, among other things, a convicted embezzler (of some $2,500 in postal funds), a monumental drunkard, an almost compulsive liar, and an addicted hemp smoker. More important, he was a disaster as Prime Minister. Although his party barely controlled less than one-fourth of the seats in Parliament, he refused to make the political compromises necessary to form a working coalition government, quickly alienated almost every important power base in the Congo. Headstrong, unstable and perpetually frenzied, Lumumba never even tried to govern. His army rebelled less than a week after he took office; his Belgian civil servants fled in terror; vital provinces tried to secede; and the land, neither administered nor policed, reverted to darkness. Howling all the while about white imperialism, Patrice Lumumba himself did not hesitate to sell the exploitation rights to the Congo’s vast resources to a fast-talking American promoter.

Temple is recognized as having won the first-ever National Collegiate basketball championship in 1938, under Coach James Usilton. Because the NCAA Tournament was not held until the following year, Temple’s NIT championship earned the Owls the first national college basketball title. Litwack would be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame after concluding a 21-year coaching career that included 373 wins.
Head Coach John Chaney, who is also a Hall of Fame coach, won a total of 724 career games and took Temple to the NCAA tournament 17 times. BRUSSELS — The sons of Congolese independence hero Patrice Lumumba said Tuesday they would seek war crimes charges against 12 Belgians they suspect of involvement in their father’s assassination.
“It is a father I am looking for, a father whom I still love, and I want to know why he was killed,” his youngest son, Guy Lumumba, told reporters in Brussels.
“We are targeting the assassins. In Belgium, there are 12 of them. They are alive and we want them to answer for their ignoble acts before justice,” he said.
The sons will file a complaint accusing the 12 of war crimes in a Brussels criminal court in October, said Lumumba family attorney Christophe Marchand.
The 12 Belgians were in the Congolese province of Katanga when Lumumba was killed there on January 17, 1961, shortly after his transfer from Leopoldville, the former name of the capital Kinshasa, Marchand said.
He refused to name them, saying he will reveal their identities to the judge, but he said the suspects include Belgian officials, police officers and soldiers.
Lumumba was the first democratically elected prime minister of Congo after it gained independence from Belgium on June 30, 1960.
He was murdered by Katanga officials four months after Joseph-Desire Mobutu took power in a coup in September 1960. The country, now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo, was renamed Zaire by Mobutu.
A Belgian parliamentary inquiry concluded in 2001 that Belgium had a “moral responsibility” in Lumumba’s assassination and the government apologised to its former colony, but no legal action was taken afterwards.
“The wounds of the past will disappear only when the truth comes out and justice is served,” Marchand said.

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was born on February 23, 1868, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, to Alfred Du Bois and Mary Silvina Burghardt Du Bois. He grew up in Great Barrington, a predominately Anglo-American town. Mary Silvina Burghardt’s family was part of the very small free black population of Great Barrington, having long owned land in the state. Their family descended from Dutch and African ancestors, including Tom, a West African-born man who served as a private for Captain John Spoor’s company in 1780, a service which likely won him his freedom. According to Du Bois, several of his maternal ancestors were notably involved in regional history.
Alfred Du Bois, from Haiti, was of French Huguenot and African descent. His grandfather was Dr. James Du Bois of Poughkeepsie, New York. Dr. Du Bois’s family was rewarded extensive lands in the Bahamas for its support of King George III during the American Revolution. On Long Cay, Bahamas, James Du Bois fathered several children with slave mistresses. When he returned to New York in 1812, James brought with him John and Alexander, two of his sons, to be educated in Connecticut. After James Du Bois died, his black sons were disowned by his family and forced to give up schooling for work. Alexander became a merchant in New Haven and married Sarah Marsh Lewis, with whom he had several children. In the 1830s Alexander went to Haiti to try to salvage his inheritance. His son Alfred was born there in about 1833. Alexander returned to New Haven without the boy and his mother.
It is unknown how Alfred Du Bois and Mary Silvina Burghardt met, but they married on February 5, 1867, in Housatonic, Massachusetts. Alfred deserted Mary by the time their son William was two. The boy was very close to his mother. When he was young, Mary suffered a stroke which left her unable to work. The two of them moved frequently, surviving on money from family members and Du Bois’s after-school jobs. Du Bois wanted to help his mother and believed he could improve their lives through education. The Johnson-Forest tendency, sometimes called the Johnsonites, refers to an American radical left tendency associated with Marxist theorists C.L.R. James and Raya Dunayevskaya, who used the pseudonyms J.R. Johnson and Freddie Forest respectively. They were joined by Grace Lee Boggs, a Chinese-American woman who was considered the third founder.
Much of the story of the Johnson-Forest tendency relates to disputes between various factions of the Trotskyist parties in the USA. James and Dunayevskaya first met in the Socialist Workers Party. From 1939–1940, there was a bitter fight amongst the members of the Socialist Workers Party, and in 1940, James, Dunayevskaya, and Max Shachtman, among others, split to form the Workers Party. James and Dunayevskaya set up a study group within the Workers Party to work on the idea of State Capitalism, and were soon joined by Lee.
While this new group rapidly cohered around politics which were very similar to those of the Socialist Workers Party, there were certain differences which eventually led to the formation of the Johnson-Forest tendency. The majority of the Workers Party members believed, as did Shachtman, that the class nature of the Soviet Union was such that it should be designated a bureaucratic collectivist society. The minority opinion, held by James, Dunayevskaya, and Lee, held that it was state capitalist. Further, James was unhappy with the WP’s lack of interest in Black activism.

Without getting permission from the U.S. Trotskyist organization, she went to Mexico in 1937 to serve as Leon Trotsky’s Russian language secretary during his exile there.[1] Having returned to Chicago in 1938 after the deaths of her father and brother, she broke with Trotsky in 1939 when he continued to maintain that the Soviet Union was a “workers’ state” even after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact (also known as the Hitler-Stalin Pact). She opposed any notion that workers should be asked to defend this “workers’ state” allied with Nazi Germany in a world war. Along with theorists such as C.L.R. James, and later Tony Cliff, Dunayevskaya argued that the Soviet Union had become ‘state capitalist’. She was born Lola Shirley Graham in Evansville, Indiana, in 1896, but often gave her age as up to ten years younger. Her father was an African Methodist Episcopal minister, and the family moved often. In June 1915, Shirley graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, Washington.[1]
She married her first husband, Shadrach T. McCants, in 1921, and divorced him in 1927. (In her memoir, however, she had asserted that she was widowed by 1925.) Their son Daniel was born in 1923, followed by David in 1925. In 1929, she relocated to Paris, France to study music composition. She reasoned that this education might allow her to achieve better employment and be able to better support her children.
In the late 1940s, Graham became a member of Sojourners for Truth and Justice – an African-American organization concerned with the global women’s liberation.[1] Approximately around the same time, she joined the American Communist Party.[1]
She and Du Bois married in 1951, the second marriage for both. They later emigrated to Ghana, where they received citizenship in 1961 and he died in 1963. In 1967, she was forced to leave after a military-led coup d’etat, and moved to Cairo, Egypt, where she continued writing. Her surviving son accompanied her and worked as a journalist.
She died of breast cancer on March 27, 1977 in Beijing, China, where she had gone for treatment

WASHINGTON — On a Friday afternoon in mid-June, President Obama sat down with advisers in the Oval Office and learned that the F.B.I. planned to round up the largest ring of Russian sleeper agents since the cold war. After discussion about what the agents had done, the conversation turned to the fallout: what to do after the arrests?
In that moment was born a back-to-the-future plan that would play out four weeks later, a prisoner exchange with surreal and even cinematic overtones as Russian and American airplanes met on a sunny tarmac in the heart of Europe on Friday to trade agents and spies much as had been done during a more hostile era.
From the first time the president was told about the case on June 11 — 16 days before the Russian agents were actually arrested — a swap emerged as an option that could resolve a potentially volatile situation without undercutting Mr. Obama’s effort to rebuild Russian-American relations. The Russian spy ring would be broken, the Americans would secure the release of four Russian prisoners and both sides could then put the episode behind them.
Administration officials said Friday that the arrests were not made for the purpose of making a deal and that no decision about a swap was made until after the agents were in custody. But they described a fast-moving sequence of events after the arrests in which both sides scrambled to reach an agreement, even to the point of Russian officials’ offering money and other benefits to encourage one of their sleeper agents to consider the deal.

MOSCOW — An advocate for an imprisoned Russian scientist, Igor V. Sutyagin, said Thursday that he had evidently been released in return for the Russian suspect Anna Chapman, in a prisoner exchange redolent of the cold war.
The advocate, Ernst Chyorny, said Mr. Sutyagin – who has served 10 years of a 14-year sentence for espionage — had called his father from Vienna, where he was met by a British officer. Family members who met with Mr. Sutyagin this week in Moscow said he had been informed he would be transported through Vienna to Britain, where he would be freed. Mr. Sutyagin’s mother, a chemical engineer in a scientific community outside Moscow, rushed home from work when she heard the news.
“So far I don’t know what happened,” said the mother, Svetlana Y. Sutyagina. “I am in a state of suspense.”
The reported exchange was not confirmed by Russian or American officials on Thursday, though anticipation had built throughout the day.
The scientist’s lawyer, Anna Stavitskaya, said Mr. Sutyagin had verbally agreed to an exchange during a meeting with Russian officials who he believed were from Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, or S.V.R., and that Americans had also been present at the meeting.
Her comments followed reports from Washington on Wednesday that just days after the F.B.I.’s sensational dismantling of a Russian spy ring, the American and Russian authorities were negotiating an exchange of some or all of the 10 espionage suspects for prisoners held in Russia, including Mr. Sutyagin.
Ms. Stavitskaya said Mr. Sutyagin had consistently denied spying for the United States, for which he was sentenced to a 14-year term, but this week he signed a document admitting guilt.
“If he is free, the United States could be thanked for one thing, for saving a person,” she said. “I am thankful to the United States, if it was the United States that included him on the list. If at last he is freed — not in the way we wanted, because we wanted him to restore his good name, but it is difficult to do it, given our judicial system — at least he will be freed in this way,” she said. “If he leaves today, it will happen quietly.”

Ms. Stavitskaya said Mr. Sutyagin had consistently denied spying for the United States, for which he was sentenced to a 14-year term, but this week he signed a document admitting guilt.
“If he is free, the United States could be thanked for one thing, for saving a person,” she said. “I am thankful to the United States, if it was the United States that included him on the list. If at last he is freed — not in the way we wanted, because we wanted him to restore his good name, but it is difficult to do it, given our judicial system — at least he will be freed in this way,” she said. “If he leaves today, it will happen quietly.”

New York – The spy scandal of the decade may soon come to a swift close, as Russian and U.S. officials negotiate a deal to swap the alleged Russian sleeper agents caught on American soil last month for a host of men jailed in Russia on charges of spying for the West.
Russian media reports said that Anna Chapman, the New York-based redhead who has come to symbolize the spy affair, would be traded for Igor Sutyagin, a Russian scientist convicted by a Moscow court in 2004 of passing nuclear secrets to the CIA.
The reports signal that several more swaps could be in the works.
Many comparisons will be made to the spy swaps of the Soviet-era — but, on the contrary, the case proves how much times have changed.
While U.S. media have fixated on tales of femme fatales, secret spy codes and the fate of children unaware of their parents’ real identities, the issue has been decidedly downplayed by U.S. and Russian officials alike.
U.S. President Barack Obama has worked hard to “reset” relations with Russia after years of tension under the Bush administration. He has backed down on building a missile defense system in Eastern Europe and cut back U.S. involvement in neighboring Ukraine and Georgia — moves that have been welcomed in a country keen to preserve influence in its backyard.
In response, Russia supported (admittedly watered-down) U.N. sanctions on Iran and appears to have backed down on calls to close a key U.S. military base in Kyrgyzstan. Both sides worked hard to renegotiate a successor treaty to START, which calls for bilateral cuts in nuclear warheads.
Now both Russia and the U.S. appear keen to sweep the spy issue under the rug as soon as possible.
Ten of the 11 suspects were due to appear in a U.S. federal court on Thursday to be arraigned for conspiring to act as spies. The 11th, and apparently most important, suspect, Christopher Robert Metsos, was arrested in Cyprus on June 29 and released on bail. Allegedly tasked with overseeing payment for the ring of U.S. sleeper agents, he has since fled the island, a favorite Russian offshore.
