John Patrick Bedell

John Patrick Bedell was shot dead after pulling a gun and firing at the Pentagon.
I am reading some reports that he was a right wing extremeist, and unstable. His parents warned authorities earlier of his behavior. Who was he really ?

  1. Report: Pentagon Shooter John Bedell Bought Gun In Sacramento
Bedell also had access to a medical marijuana card, had been detained for mental health evaluations in the past.
    By: Matthew Keys FOX40 News

SACRAMENTO – A missing person’s report released Friday morning suggests suspected Pentagon shooter John Patrick Bedell purchased a firearm at a shooting range in Sacramento.

According to the report filed January 4th, Bedell is suspected of purchasing a firearm at an unidentified Sacramento shooting range the previous day.

The report, apparently filed by Bedell’s father to the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department, said Bedell disappeared shortly before New Year’s Eve 2009. Bedell had access to a medical marijuana card and had been detained for mental health evaluations in the past, according to the report.

The report also stats Bedell was pulled over in Northern Texas by a highway patrol officer for speeding on January 3rd. The report also shows Bedell returned to the Bay Area on January 18th and was removed as a missing person from a California law enforcement database sometime thereafter.

Bedell allegedly opened fire on two Pentagon police officers Thursday evening. Bedell was wounded when authorities returned fire and later died of his injuries.

    • Pentagon gunman: Local roots, downward spiral

Jaxon Van Derbeken,Victoria Colliver, Chronicle Staff Writers

In an undated photo provided by San Jose state University, John Patrick Bedell is seen in a student Identification picture. Authorities said Bedell pulled a handgun at a Pentagon entrance in Washington on Thursday, March 4, 2010, shot two police officers and was mortally wounded in an exchange of gunfire. The two officers were hospitalized briefly with minor injuries.

Pentagon gunman: Local roots, downward spiral 03.05.10

(03-05) 16:14 PST SAN JOSE — The man who wounded two guards at the Pentagon on Thursday before being shot to death was a former San Jose State University chemical engineering student with a history of mental problems, whose parents in Hollister were worried about a recent purchase he had made at a Sacramento gun range, authorities said Friday.

A portrait emerged of 36-year-old John Patrick Bedell as a man who appeared to deteriorate mentally in recent years, as he ran up a record of minor crimes and posted conspiracy theories about the government on the Internet.

Bedell left no known explanation for Thursday’s attack, in which he fired a pair of semi-automatic weapons at two guards at the Pentagon entrance before being shot to death. The guards suffered minor injuries.

Bedell lived off and on with his parents in Hollister and had himself admitted to mental health centers four times in recent years, according to authorities in San Benito County.

Although troubled, he also showed flashes of brilliance. He had recently done postgraduate work in chemical engineering at San Jose State, where he was an undergraduate in the 1990s. A former professor called him a student “you look forward to having in class.”

      Family’s devastation

His family issued a statement saying they were devastated by Thursday’s events.

“To the outside world, this tragedy is the first and only thing they will know of Patrick,” the family said. “To us, he was a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin. We may never know why he made this terrible decision. One thing is clear, though – his actions were caused by an illness and not a defective character.”

Bedell had repeated contacts with police over the years, including one that bedeviled him.

In June 2006, police in Irvine (Orange County) arrested Bedell for growing 16 marijuana plants on his apartment balcony. “The cops had to carry him down three flights of stairs,” Irvine police Lt. Henry Boggs said Friday.

Bedell was convicted of misdemeanor resisting arrest, put in a drug court program and told not to have firearms, a restriction that was lifted last year.

      Conspiracy postings

A subsequent Internet posting by a JPatrickBedell railed against the government’s enforcement of marijuana laws and cited the Irvine case.

The writer also said that he was “determined to see that justice is served” in the death of Marine Col. James Sabow, who was found dead in his backyard in Orange County in 1991.

The death was ruled a suicide, but the posting said the case was “a step toward establishing the truth of events such as the September 11 demolitions.” Internet conspiracy sites have theorized that Sabow was actually killed as part of an effort to cover up a treasonous plot.

Bedell also wrote on his LinkedIn blog of his suspicions that the government was behind the 2001 terrorist attacks.

      Mountain View case

The Orange County marijuana case wasn’t Bedell’s only run-in with the law. In August 2007, he was arrested for brandishing a 6-foot-long martial arts stick at a man in Mountain View when he was told he couldn’t play soccer, police said.

“The suspect swung the stick at the victim and said, ‘Do you want to keep your original teeth?’ ” Steve McCoy, a Mountain View police spokesman, said Friday.

Bedell was given 20 days doing work in lieu of jail after pleading guilty to disturbing the peace.

In spring 2008, Bedell enrolled in postgraduate engineering studies at San Jose State, the university said. He stayed into 2009 but was not enrolled this school year.

Students knew him as someone who was dedicated to his work but did not socialize much.

“I used to see him study a lot,” said Miguel Munguia, an electrical engineering undergraduate. “Nobody really knew him personally. I think he kept to himself.”

Bedell was described as a top student by one of his professors, David Parent, who called him a “gentle man and someone seeking to help others.”

      Good student

Parent, an associate electrical engineering professor, spoke emotionally about the student he knew as “JP.”

“He was one of those students you look forward to having in class,” he said. Bedell was not only a hardworking student, Parent said, but was always prepared and not afraid to ask questions.

Bedell formed a Google user group to help his fellow students learn electrical circuit design, Parent said. He never gave any indications of mental problems or extreme anti-government sentiments, he said.

Bedell’s mental problems, however, were apparent to law enforcement. In 2003, a San Benito County sheriff’s deputy spotted him disoriented late at night, wandering in the middle of a street in Hollister, Sheriff Curtis Hill said Friday. He was taken to his parents’ home.

On Jan. 3 of this year, the Texas Highway Patrol stopped Bedell near Amarillo for speeding. A patrolman said Bedell was behaving strangely, but he let him go with a warning after calling Bedell’s mother, Hill said.

Bedell’s family learned that he had returned to California when they discovered he had made a $600 purchase at a gun range near Sacramento on Jan. 10, Hill said. It is unknown what he bought, but the sheriff said Bedell’s parents had told authorities they were “concerned.”

Under federal law, Bedell would have had to wait 15 days after buying a gun to take possession. He did not have a felony conviction and had not been involuntarily committed to a mental institution, so he was eligible to purchase a firearm.

Bedell returned to his parents’ home Jan. 18, telling them “not to ask any questions” about where he had been, Hill said.

On Feb. 1, Bedell was arrested in Reno after a sheriff’s deputy making a traffic stop found 2 ounces of marijuana in his Toyota sedan, according to Washoe County authorities.

He was ordered to appear in court March 2, but did not show up. Authorities believe drove the same Toyota across the country to Washington, D.C., parked the car in a shopping mall garage and, dressed in slacks, a white shirt and blazer, went to the Pentagon across the Potomac River on Thursday and opened fire.

  2. Updated: Suspected Pentagon gunman was from Hollister; recently attended SJ State

    Mar 4, 2010
    By The Free Lance Staff

The 36-year-old man suspected in the Pentagon shooting Thursday was from Hollister and graduated from San Benito High School, local and media sources have confirmed.

John Patrick Bedell was identified shortly after the shootings by the Associated Press.

Local sources have confirmed Bedell is the son of Kaye Bedell, the director of allied health at Gavilan College, and his father is John Bedell, Sr., a local financial planner. Bedell’s grandfather, O.J. Bedell, was the longtime president of Bank of America here.

San Benito County Supervisor Reb Monaco confirmed to the Free Lance he and his family have been “close” with the Bedells for “30-something years.”

“I am just shocked by it,” said Monaco, who had just heard about the local connection.

  3. Parents of Pentagon Shooter Warned Authorities About Him

    Friday, March 05, 2010

HOLLISTER, Calif. — The man who opened fire in front of the Pentagon had a history of mental illness and had become so erratic that his parents reached out to local authorities weeks ago and warned them that their son was unstable and might have a gun, authorities said Friday.

  4. Meanwhile, at home, John Ashcroft is living up to my worst expectations, the FBI is jailing hundreds of innocents for immigration violations and conspicuously not catching any terrorists, and signs that an ever more intrusive state surveillance apparatus is a-building are everywhere. The budget nonsense is also disgusting; who ever heard of announcing a war and a tax cut in the same speech? Not, as Al indicates, that the Democrats have behaved any better on this score, but Bush’s rhetoric about making the war on terrorism his “focus” looks like a sham when you put his budget beside it.

Things could be much worse, but they could be much better, too.

The main fighting is over in Iraq, the tyrant is gone, the statues have been pulled down, the mass graves are being dug up, and I still say the war was a crime and a blunder.

I’m happy that Saddam is gone, and I wish the Iraqis the best. But I think all talk of an Arab democracy is still fantasy. So far the only political forces that have shown any strength in the country are the Shia mosques, led by mullahs committed to various degrees of Islamic fundamentalism, and the Kurdish separatists. Rampant crime and other problems of order provide the perfect backdrop for a dictatorship, whether it turns out to be a theocracy or just another in the long line of Iraqi strongmen. Whatever affection the Iraqis felt for their American liberators has already been sapped by looting, crime, prolonged power outages, and other problems. Rather than admit that they sent an inadequate force to do a nearly impossible job, the Pentagon has recently sacked the leadership of its postwar transition team, which leads me to think that they are still lost in a fantasy land where a prosperous democracy can be created by a quick military victory and a few proclamations. I think the future for Iraq is anything but rosy.

I am a goddamn nutcase. My hope is to use the creativity of markets and advanced technology to transcend the destructive regimes that have fastened themselves upon the world. I have dreamed for an number of years of creating v:production econosystems, which I hope to apply to the creation of v:security service econosystems using new and economic mechanisms and information technology.

I have a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and studied biochemistry at San Jose State University. I’ve studied electrical engineering with the goal of creating microsystems for molecular analysis.[1][2][3][4] You can see a proposal to use aluminum anodization as an adsorption method for DNA molecules on CMOS chips at v:DNA_integrated_circuit/proposal_import_2007 (which originates from an unsuccessful DARPA proposal to create a “microMIRV” interoperable with standard firearms ammunition), and a proposal to use xenon difluoride to create a picoliter-scale computer-controlled device for sorting biomolecules (available at v:Capillary_electrode_array/proposal_import_2007), including DNA and protein molecules. My goals include the discovery of a protein sequence for the diamondase enzyme, enabling the creation of macroscale diamond structures, and the creation of self-assembled macrosystems with CMOS DNA-integrated circuits. The scale of these and other projects have led me to develop financial instruments representing information as a tool to manage large projects that are very knowledge-intensive.

I am determined to see that justice is served in the death of Colonel James Sabow, as a step toward establishing the truth of events such as the September 11 demolitions and institutions such as the coup regime of 1963 that maintains itself in power through the global drug trade, financial corruption, and murder, among other crimes. My work to develop information currency is an effort to create a framework for information management that uses financial markets to create the economic signals (prices) that will effect complex human actions in the real world based on specified information. My desire for justice led me to violate what I think is one of the most unjust laws, cannabis prohibition, by growing 16 cannabis plants on my balcony in Irvine, CA from March 2006 to June 2006. I’ve posted the Orange County, CA District Attorney’s complaint for this offense at http://cannabis.wikia.com/wiki/JPatrickBedell_2006-06-06_cannabis_felony_complaint .

One desired result of my effort is (will be) billions and billions of carefully cultivated, highly valuable cannabis plants growing throughout the United States with complete security of property. I have posted the image to the right in order to illustrate the use of cannabis as a monetary system using digital financial instruments. There are two information currency units in each of the PDF417 codes pictured. One of the information currency units is drawn from a series with “one gram cannabis” with the underlying asset, and the second ICU in each code has as its underlying asset the URL http://www.mises.org/humanaction/pdf/humanaction.pdf and the SHA-1 digest value of the file at that location (fd8205cb8b4793d43b57ba6f6c7367aa700c307a). This is a way of associating the work of Ludwig von Mises with financial value, which may be a tool to implement his ideas in reality. I hope someday to see full-reserve banking and observance of Article One, Section 10 of the US Constitution.

I apologize for the graphic content of some of my contributions, but detailed evidence is sometimes necessary to address important matters. I am very disturbed by the fact that Col. Sabow’s civilian superiors and their successors have been able to continue their narco-mercantilism. For historical comparison, I might resemble the odd German still complaining about the murders of the Night of the Long Knives in 1938(?). Of course, Wikipedia didn’t exist in 1938!

I am looking for collaborators for ongoing commercial and intellectual efforts. Email to jpbedell at mises.com is welcome!

The guy was trying to sell his work to the Pentagon. He got mad when they did not give him a 5 star salute for his invention ? Who knows, but the guy is not a tea party kinda guy no matter how anyone tries to spin him. He had serious mental issues. he was not brewing tea. He had a different herbal tea he liked !

Pentagon shooter little known by neighbors
Comments Mar 6, 2010 1:05 AM (1 day ago) By TRACIE CONE and BROOKE DONALD, AP

    Snip –

Family and friends now paint a portrait of a troubled man who sank deep into mental illness and anti-government rants, even as his mother – a nursing instructor – tried to seek help.

“The family tried over and over to get him into some kind of treatment, but because he was an adult, they were restricted,” said Reb Monaco, a family friend for three decades. “Patrick himself was in some sort of denial.”

    Snip –

After a 2006 marijuana and resisting arrest case in Orange County, Calif., his psychiatrist said Bedell tried to self-medicate with pot, inadvertently making his bi-polar disorder symptoms more pronounced.

In a letter to the court in 2008, Bedell explained: “I was experiencing an episode of mental illness… which subsequently led to psychiatric hospitalization. I do not have any record of threatened or actual violence prior to this incident, and I am deeply sorry…”

Bedell lived here with his parents in a gated golf course community. His mother Kaye is director of the nursing program at Gavilan College. His father, Oscar John Bedell Jr., is a private financial adviser.

“In my opinion, they are the typical American Family,” said Pat Loe, a county supervisor who has known the family for 30 years.

    Snip –

On Jan. 3, a Texas Department of Public Safety officer stopped him for speeding near Amarillo, smelling of marijuana and saying he was heading to the East Coast. Bedell acted strangely, sitting on his knees by the roadside and turning off his cell phone whenever it rang.

After his mother called, the officer asked to speak to her. A patrol spokesman declined to reveal the conversation Friday but said Bedell was cited for possessing drug paraphernalia and released.

Bedell’s mother told Monaco, the family friend, that she had wanted her son taken to a mental institution. “But they couldn’t because he is an adult and he refused,” Monaco said.

The next morning, fearing for their son’s well-being, Bedell’s parents filed a missing person’s report.

Within days, Kaye Bedell found a message on her son’s computer indicating he had spent $600 at a gun store or shooting range in El Dorado County, east of Sacramento. She was afraid he had purchased a gun or ammunition, said San Benito County Sheriff Curtis Hill.

    Snip –

Internet postings suggested Bedell was fascinated with conspiracy theories, computer programming, libertarian economics and the science of warfare.

In a 28-page document, Bedell proposed in 2004 that the Pentagon fund his research on smart weapons that might “provide significant new capabilities for the Department of Defense and the individual warfighter.”

  20. Pentagon Shooter & Registered Democrat Used Arabic Terms & Font In His Internet Postings

John Patrick Bedell, the man who went on a shooting spree outside the Pentagon this week, was a Bush-hating, pot smoking, registered democrat.

Although, officials said he did not have any suspected links to terrorist groups it was discovered this weekend that Bedell used the Arabic term “inshallah” or “God willing,” using Arabic font – “إن شاء الله” – on more than one on his internet postings.

    Creeping Shariah reported:

A Twitter post revealed that John Patrick Bedell had an account on SourceForge containing “Jihad code.” Looking at the account of jpbedell – he used the Arabic term “inshallah” or “God willing,” using Arabic font – “إن شاء الله” – on more than one page. Here are screenshots from the website and project named “openinsurgent.”

You won’t see this reported by the state-run media. In fact, they still haven’t reported that Bedell was a registered democrat.

Check out the nifty links on the side of the page that I linked to; you can browse by individual, group, or idealogy.

Browsing through their files shows that they track only one black group (Nation of Islam) and mostly white individuals. They track radical groups that are “patriots”, Jewish (one) and Catholic (one), many that are Christian (supposedly), but NOT ONE that is a domestic radical ISLAMIST group, if you exempt Farrakhan’s group, which they apparently oppose because of its black nationalist/black superiority ideology.

Check out their “hate map”. Do you see anything on it for Dearborn, Michigan? That place must be a hotbed of tolerance and racial and social diversity.

They say that the Tea Partiers can’t “fairly” be labeled right-wing extremists, yet there are 19 stories on their site that attempt to link tea partiers with white extremists and other extremist groups.

There’s nothing for Bedell. They have a blog, however, http://www.splcenter.org/blog/

The blogger Potok admits Bedell had some left-wing ideas, but he didn’t mention, of course, that Bedell’s a registered Democrat who used jihadi language. Potok does seem to twist and turn to find a label to fit Bedell, which might associate him with political groups that the SPLC opposes.

“Radical libertarian”. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Rather amazingly, Potok the blogger associates 9/11 “truthers” with the LEFT wing! He must not have gotten the memo.

I can find no stories on the SPLC website about Malik Hasan, either. Their blog mentions a military report issued after the Fort Hood massacre/Islamist, domestic terrorist attack, but Potok focuses on how the SPLC was out in front, writing to the military in 2009 to warn them about WHITE and RIGHT WING extremists in the military. Nothing about the risk of having radical Islamists in the military.

  22. I haven’t had success with the hotstocked.com link refered to by Leza above, however I did find reference to Bedell’s father’s Hollister California SagePoint brokerage business that does appear to now be part of the AIG financial mafia.

John Bedell, or at least of his father who has the same name(John), runs a FINRA approved stock dealing company in Hollister called SagePoint.
And it appears AIG scumbags are now hiding behind that name after having dirtied their own.

AIGFA to Re-Brand – Will Now be SagePoint

AIG announced that AIG Financial Advisors is being re-branded (changing its name) to SagePoint Financial. Clearly they are trying to distance themselves from the negative brand image that the mother-ship, AIG, is enjoying at the moment. AIGFA is the second largest of the three B/D’s in the AIG Advisor Group. The other two being Royal Alliance and FSC – who, conveniently, are not tainted at the moment with the AIG brand name……..

I don’t know either if the father John Bedell of Hollister is related to Jeff Bedell of Sacramento but their businesses seem to be similar including AIG and it appears SagePoint Financial connections.I wonder if they have an Agora Inc connection as well ? James Dale Davidson’s and Bill Bonner’s Agora Inc. have fraudulent business scams around the world and California is no exception. After the Goldcor fraud with its Costa Rica connections in the 1980’s,Goldcor’s name was changed to Oxford Club under the corporate umbrella of Jim Dale Davidson’s and Bill Bonner’s and Lord William Rees-Mogg’s Agora Inc..
It has been rumored that Agora Inc is involved with U.S.AID in some sort of debt
swap schemes in Latin America. Is this true or is it another ‘Agora’? I’m not from the Washington,D.C. area and so not up to the low downs and dirtes there some of you might be aware of.
